Risks and Rewards of a Manicure

Risks and Rewards of a Manicure

Getting a manicure or a pedicure these days is easy considering the thousands of nail salons and beauty parlors that offer these services. But did you know that these procedures can be dangerous at the wrong hands?

Dr. Richard Scher of the American Academy of Dermatology said that you can contract a host of diseases from your friendly manicurist if you’re not careful. This usually comes from dirty instruments and overzealous cleaning.

“Millions of women visit manicurists to have their nails professionally manicured every year. Unfortunately, occasionally the result of having manicures is developing nail fungus or bacterial infections which can not only look bad but may also feel even worse. Although HIV or AIDS can be transmitted through broken skin that occurs during a visit to a nail salon, this is extremely rare,” explained Tracee Cornforth in “10 Tips for healthy manicures.”

Manicures have certainly gone a long way since they were first used in Egypt in 3,000 B.C. In those days, men and women of high social standing used henna to stain their nails red-orange. The darker the color of the nails, the more important the person was.

Today, it is estimated that American women (and men) spend over billion yearly on nail care products and services. A big portion of that amount goes to manicurists who “treat” nails.

On the plus side, a weekly manicure can make your nails look better, cleaner, and prevent nail-biting which can be a sign of chronic tension or anxiety.

The risk from manicures comes mainly from dirty tools. Some manicurists simply “sanitize” their instruments with a nail polish remover or alcohol. Scher said this is not enough to protect the customer from various diseases.

“Only a heat-pressurized sterilizer offers complete protection. And although the hazards are hardly life-threatening (there are no known reported cases yet of blood-borne diseases like AIDS or hepatitis being transmitted), you can get warts and other infections if tools aren’t properly sterilized,” said Dana Sullivan in Health magazine.

One common nail problem you can get from a bad manicure is onychomycosis or ringworm of the nails, a stubborn nail infection that’s difficult to treat. This can discolor your nails and make them dull, brittle, and flaky. The cuticle becomes red, tender, and swollen, and pus may ooze from your infected nails.

To minimize your risk of acquiring onychomycosis and other nail problems, go to a reputable parlor or salon. Make sure the place is clean and well-lighted. Bring your own tools if possible and keep them clean. If you’re not using your own manicure kit, see to it that all instruments are cleaned and disinfected before and after they are used. Manicurists should wash their hands before and after each client.

If you develop an infection after the procedure, report the matter to your state cosmetology board. Prescription antifungal medications may ease your suffering but not all of them work and some have serious side effects. A better alternative is Somasin AFS. This natural fungus-fighter stops stubborn nail infections in just seven days. Check out http://www.somasin.com for details.

Pet Grooming Supplies and Tips

Grooming is one of those things that pet owners look at differently. Grooming is an essential part of your pet’s health. Some people look at grooming a dog as an occasional use of a brush or comb. There really is a lot more to your dog’s health than using a brush or comb every once in a while. Think about it, you as a human brush and comb your hair. You do this to keep it manageable and to stimulate your scalp. You also wash your hair with shampoo to remove dirt and oils.

In addition you may use a type of rinse to help condition your hair. Dogs need the same type of care with their coat, i.e. frequent use of a brush/comb, as well as the routine use of a shampoo and conditioner can really benefit your pet. Dogs have different types of coat; therefore, you need to make sure you use the correct shampoo and conditioner.

Just like people, skin, ears, and nails need to be kept in their best condition for the overall best health of your pet.

Skin needs to be kept soft and supple. Besides who wants to be itchy and need to scratch all the time…this really is no fun for you or your pet. The type of food your pet eats effects their skin. Be sure you feed your pet good quality foods for the best skin/coat results. There are many great shampoos and conditioners specifically formulated to help keep your pet’s coat and skin soft and supple.

A pet’s ears can be viewed similar to a humans ear….they both must be kept clean for your pet’s best health. A pet’s ear can get dirty and oily. Without proper care and attention a pet’s ear can end up with an infection. Keeping the ear clean can be done by using special cleaners. You need to make sure you routinely (weekly) check your pet’s ears, making sure they are clean and infection free.

Using special ear cleaner and the gentle use of a Q-tip, you can keep their ears in tip top shape. Nails need attention too. Keeping up on your pet’s nails is a very important part of your pets grooming. Not keeping up on your pet’s nails is not a road you want to go down. The longer the nail, the longer the quik inside the nail grows. You must take extreme care never to cut or damage the quik. This can cause a great deal of pain for your pet. For the best nail care, carefully use clippers or a dremel to frequently shorten your pet’s nails.

Nail Salons and Chemical Health Hazards

Nail Salons and Chemical Health Hazards

Do you ever walk by a nail salon (or hair salon) and wonder about the chemical health hazards to those that work there or patronize the salons?

In today’s society, nail salons can be seen at just about every strip mall in North America. Unfortunately, so many of these small salons offer cheap prices and hire refugees that are willing to work for low wages. The detrimental health affects are countless for both the employee and the customer (but more so for the employee).

In California alone, there are over 114,000 licensed nail technicians and more than 260,000 licensed cosmetologists. Current data is insufficient, but at this time language is considered to be the most common barrier when trying to obtain workplace health and safety information.

Many young women are in their fertile years and have not even had children yet and don’t have a full understanding of the health risks associated with the chemicals used in nail care.

According to a survey done within the last year from the Northern California Cancer Center and Asian Health Services of Oakland, the women who work in these nail salons suffer acute health effects from the chemicals that they come in contact with each day.

Many toxic and potentially hazardous ingredients, including solvents, plasticizers, resins and acids, are commonly found in nail care products. Three top ingredients of concern in many nail products are:

Toluene - used in nail polish – it is a clear, colorless liquid used to make products such as dyes, paints, paint thinners and explosives. Exposure to toluene can affect the central nervous system with low level symptoms such as headache, dizziness, and fatigue. Toluene is also an irritant to the eyes, nose and throat. At very high exposures, toluene has been found to be toxic to the kidneys and liver, and is a possible reproductive toxin. Formaldehyde – used in nail polish, it is a preservative that has many uses, one of which is embaling. Formaldehyde is an irritant to the eyes, nose and throat, and exposure can lead to coughing, wheezing and asthma symptoms. Repeated skin exposure can lead to skin irritation and an allergic rash called dermatitis. It is also a known human carcinogen. Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP) – used in nail polish as a plasticizer. DBP is a possible reproductive or developmental toxin.

Many women surveyed and questioned reported having some health problems after they began working in the industry, particularly skin and eye irritation, breathing difficulties and headaches. These are just some of the apparent health issues reported and doesn’t cover more chronic illnesses.

It should be mentioned that there is a difference between ‘higher-end salons’ and what is considered to be ‘lower-end salons’. As an example, products used in higher-end salons are of higher quality which means better formulation which equals less-toxic chemicals. Such as when you get a typical French manicure or pedicure, it is done by hand with the nail polish. Whereas, at a lower-end salon, it would be applied with a spray that emits high toxic particles into the air.

If you are the consumer, in the long run and for health reasons, it is always better to pay a bit more and go to the higher-end salon to have your nails done. Be sure the salon you frequent has proper ventilation and maintains a high level of cleanliness.

Likewise, any worker in a nail salon should make sure they are aware of any health and safety risks and obtain a copy of those risks in their respective language.
